Hey there, ramparts and star-spangled banners!
In the R and B world where I reside, a lot of young ones tend to carry a bit of a chip on their shoulder and not give their propers to the talented artists before them.
Only a fool would ignore a musical group flat out just because their genre doesn’t always jive with yours, ya dig?
And I’ll be the first cat to say that New Wave music can be a heaping mess. Synthesizers replacing the feel of a natural groove. Hideous fashion sense and coke-addled lyrics. It was a dark time for soul singers in the eighties, but we made it through, and I dare say we learned a few things from these artists too.
But as soon as I hear some young buck going on about how phony and pointless New Wave music can be, I just give ‘em three words:
Tears for Fears.
Lot of you know I did a pretty solid UK tour in the eighties. It was there that I found myself standing outside a nightclub in London, waiting for a lovely paramour to meet me so we could check out this new band she adored.
From the moment Roland Orzabal opened his mouth, I has hooked, baby.
I’d never heard a New Wave singer with such depth and conviction.
After the concert, I met the group and offered to introduce them to my manager. The rest, dear readers, is history.
But don’t take my word for it! Take a listen to their greatest sounds, and rediscover the power of Tears for Fears:
1) Woman in Chains - Talk about an amazing duet, dear readers!
I love the way the music just keeps building and building throughout the entire song.
Plus, a perfect example on how the group commits to telling a story in their music.
2) Head Over Heels - Here is the perfect balance of humor and need, all rolled up into one smashing tune.
Mighty fine love song, I might add. A great example on how a lover doesn’t have to be a good looker to get the loving they need, so long as they let their skills shine.
Plus, who doesn’t love a monkey in a music video?
3) Shout - This sums up the mentality of the group nicely.
Passionate guys who have their share of demons and refuse to let it get them down. A nice reminder why artists come to art.
4) Mad World - I think the sign of a great artist is the ability to create a phenomenal song, and decades later, have another artist make it sound fresh and vital again.
Here’s Tears for Fear’s version:
Here’s a cover by Gary Jules :
Love Tears for Fears?
Hate them?
